Al-Jalil “AJ” Williams is an award-nominated filmmaker and proud Newark native whose work explores the humor, heartbreak, and humanity in everyday life. He is the founder of Handsome Dad Films, a production company dedicated to powerful storytelling that highlights underrepresented voices, especially within Black communities, families, and modern relationships.
AJ began his journey in the TV and film industry as a production assistant, where he learned the ins and outs of set life, logistics, writing, directing, and producing. His breakout short film, The Word, earned award nominations for its bold take on friendship, race, and morality. His latest project, So, What Now?, continues his mission to tell emotionally grounded and culture-rich stories rooted in real life.
AJ is also a dedicated father and multi-hyphenate creative who is building a legacy for the next generation of filmmakers. He believes great art begins with truth, and he carries the spirit, grit, and pride of Newark into every project he creates.
